Attorney James M. Kane, licensed in Georgia, New York, and North Carolina, is with the Atlanta law firm Kane Law LLC (www.kanelawatlanta.com), is a tax and trust planning attorney. James is AV Rated on martindale.com and listed on superlawyers.com. For approximately the past 15 years James handled an extensive amount of non-tax trust and estate litigation (and trust/estate planning); but beginning in 2022 handles primarily trust and estate planning; with litigation now only as a consulting and expert witness for both tax and non-tax disputes, especially where trusts are at center stage. Prior to law school James was an IRS Revenue Agent with the Atlanta IRS large-case examination division.
James’s combined tax, trust, and litigation experience gives him a broad perspective for identifying, understanding, and addressing complex trust issues and disputes along with both the tax and non-tax factors that ideally must together be taken into account. He has 25+ years’ experience previously with Atlanta law firms Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan; Chamberlain, Hrdlicka, White, Williams & Aughtry; and KaneTreadwell Law LLC. James attended Emory University Law School and has undergraduate finance (University of Georgia) and graduate business (Georgia State University) degrees. Although he never worked as a CPA, James held a CPA certificate (now intentionally lapsed) during his pre-law school time with the IRS.
James maintains a legal blog (google: James Kane Legal Blog) and currently writes periodically for Leimberg Information Services. He previously has written for Estate Planning magazine, Virginia Tax Review, Emory International Law Review, and other publications. James was the winner of the University of Miami 2016 Heckerling Institute Tax Court Opinion writing contest. James’s outside interests include studying jazz guitar, reading, weightlifting, and fixed-gear bicycling.
